Charlie Lee Byrd, born in Suffolk, Virginia, on September 16, 1925 (he died on December 2, 1999) was one of the first modern guitar players to believe in a re-insertion of the unamplified Spanish guitar in jazz. His earliest and strongest musical influence was Django Reinhardt, the famous Gypsy guitarist who, in his final years, had switched to the electric guitar. Presented here is the complete LP The Guitar Artistry of Charlie Byrd (Riverside Records OLP-93007), which showcases the guitarist in a trio format backed by bass and drums. Three amazing 1957 blues performances by Byrd (once again in a trio setting) have been added here as a bonus.
