- Quincy Jones big band sessions & Ralph Burns string arrangements
Description
Originally issued in 1959 as The Genius Of Ray Charles (Atlantic SD-1312), this landmark album captures Ray Charles at the height of his vocal and interpretive powers. The first half of the record pairs Charles with a powerhouse big band conducted by Quincy Jones, featuring players associated with the Count Basie and Duke Ellington orchestras. The result is a dynamic, swinging set where Charles belts out standards and rhythm numbers with unmatched soul and authority.
The second half shifts to lush ballads arranged and conducted by Ralph Burns, with Charles backed by a refined string orchestra. Across both settings, his voice remains the unifying force — expressive, nuanced and emotionally direct, bringing fresh depth even to the most familiar standards.
This limited edition is pressed on 180-gram red colored vinyl and includes two bonus tracks, alongside specially prepared liner notes by Brian Morton (The Penguin Guide To Jazz) and Paris’ prestigious Jazz Magazine.
