"The Birth of a Band" (Mercury SR-60129), recorded in 1959, presents a selection of standard numbers composed by renowned jazzmen and features a starstudded band featuring Harry “Sweets” Edison, Clark Terry, Jimmy Cleveland, Zoot Sims, Benny Golson & Phil Woods, among many other stars. The bossa nova craze started in 1962 by Stan Getz, was continued by various other jazz artists. Big Band Bossa Nova (Mercury SR-60751), which is also included here in its entirety, marked Quincy Jones’ fi rst incursion into the Brazilian music genre. Among the featured players are such names as Clark Terry, Phil Woods, Roland Kirk, Lalo Schifrin, and Jim Hall.
