4 1/2 STARS ON ALL MUSIC GUIDE
During 1957 jazz producer Norman Granz was fond of pairing the legendary drummer-less trio of Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, and Ray Brown, with several different stars from the Jazz at the Philharmonic concert series. Stan Getz and the Oscar Peterson Trio was the first quartet pairing of Getz and the pianist, both of whom had previously collaborated together on other Granz albums, such as Diz & Getz (also showcasing Dizzy Gillespie), and Jazz Giants ’58 (also featuring Harry “Sweets” Edison and Gerry Mulligan). Although they continued working together here and there, Getz and Peterson would never record another album in this format.
Stan Getz and the Oscar Peterson Trio was given a rating of four and a half stars in All Music Guide by Michael G. Nastos, who stated that, “Granz could not have found a better match for the pianist alongside his peerless combo than the ripe, mature, and bebopping tenor saxophonist. It was a one-shot deal, the only official collaboration between Getz and Peterson. On this great album for the times and all time, these wonderful musicians are on from the word go, providing music that any mainstream jazz lover can embrace.”
