4 1/2 STARS ALL MUSIC GUIDE
The Max Roach-Clifford Brown quintet began its run at the onset of 1954. All of the music contained here is regarded as true jazz milestones, not only for the amazing trumpet playing, but also for the overwhelming interaction and understanding between Brownie and Roach, and between all of the members of the band as a whole. The material includes original versions of some of Brownie’s best compositions, like “Joy Spring” and “Daahoud,” as well as memorable readings of pianist Duke Jordan’s “Jordu” and Bud Powell’s beautiful composition “Parisian Thoroughfare.” This fantastic group was destined to end in tragedy, for in the early morning hours of June 26, 1956, Clifford Brown died in a car accident (at the age of 25) along with pianist Richie Powell (who was Bud Powell’s younger brother) and the pianist’s wife.
